LOCATION
Northampton County is located in northeastern North Carolina astride the state's Coastal Plain and Piedmont Regions. The county is located 90 miles northeast of Raleigh, the state capital, and 50 miles north of Rocky Mount, N.C. Bordered by Virginia on the north, the County lies 90 miles southwest of Norfolk, VA and is 200 miles south of Washington, DC.

A generally moderate climate prevails. The annual average temperature is 60 degrees with January temperatures averaging 40.5 degrees and July temperatures 75.8 degrees. Precipitation includes an average of 43 inches of rainfall a year and seven inches of snow.

Roads: Northampton County is excellently situated with respect to highways. Interstate 95, the nation's major north-south thoroughfare on the eastern coast, bisects the county. Three U. S. primary routes cross Northampton: 158,258 and 301. In addition, there are six state primary routes providing ready access to destinations in all directions.
Rail: CSX Transportation, Inc. offers freight and piggyback service in the County along three main tracks.
Air: Commercial air service is available at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (90 miles) and Norfolk,VA International Airport (90 miles). Additionally, two Municipal airports serve Northampton County at Woodland and Roanoke Rapids. Each have a 4000 foot paved lighted runway with fuel available.
Ports: The deep-water port complex at Hampton Roads, VA, is located 90 miles northeast of Northampton County, with direct highway and rail linkage. The Chowan River (30 miles) supports bulk-shipping barge traffic via the Albemarle Sound and the Inter-coastal Waterway to ports in North Carolina and Virginia.
Bus: Commercial bus services are provided to Northampton County residents by Carolina Trailways and Greyhound.
Freight: Two local terminals and numerous regional carriers serve the Northampton County area.

Newspaper: News & Observer, a morning daily published in Raleigh, NC, Virginian Pilot & Ledger Star, a morning daily published in Norfolk, VA, Daily Herald, an afternoon daily published in Roanoke Rapids, NC, Roanoke Chowan News Herald, published three times a week located in Ahoskie, NC.
Radio: WBCG-FM and AM, is located on US Hwy 158 east of Conway. WZRU a Public Broadcasting Station is located in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The broadcasts of numerous other AM and FM stations in North Carolina and Virginia are received in Northampton County.
Television: ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and PBS affiliate stations have broadcast coverage throughout the county. Cable TV is widely available in the county.

NATURAL RESOURCES
Commercial Forest land covers 195,000 acres. Dominant forest types are loblolly pine, oak, gum, cypress, hickory, and hardwood/pine. Public and private supplies of water are obtained from wells. Large supplies of process water may be obtained from Roanoke or Meherrin rivers.
LOCAL ECONOMY
Agri-business accounts for approximately one-third of the local business. The market Value of farm products sold include peanuts at $19.7 million; cotton, $23 million; hogs, $22.7 million; poultry, $20.8 million; forestry products, $16.3 million; beef cattle, $1.5 million; tobacco, $800 thousand; and soy beans, $600 thousand. The total value including miscellaneous products is $108 million. Principle types of industrial and commercial activity in the county are textile, apparel, lumber, chemical manufacturing, boat manufacturing, and agricultural processing.

Marriage License Requirements: Under 21 years of age, a person must present Drivers License, Social Security Card or Number and Birth Certificate. Under 16 years of age a person must have their parents certification. If a person is divorced they must present their divorce decree signed by a Judge. If a person is a widow they must have spouses death certificate.
